Back in 2001, Afghanistan only had 80 kilometers of paved roads and the country needed the U.S. help for better infrastructure. But the U.S. never made much progress despite pouring in billions of dollars. And even the sections completed are beyond repair. China starts from somewhere different. The Wakhan Corridor, the narrow stretch of Afghanistan that reaches to the Chinese border with Xinjiang, was the route once used by Marco Polo to enter China.
