This is the South-to-North Water Diversion (Middle Route) Project, stretching from Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Hanjiang River, a tributary of the Yangtze, to Tuancheng Lake of the Summer Palace in Beijing. It helps provide water to 24 major cities and over 200 counties and districts, directly benefiting 85 million residents along the route. The grand three-route project was proposed in the 1950s. After half a century of planning, 12 years of construction and over eight years of operation, hundreds of millions of people are experiencing the benefits.
