持《楞严 咒》能破犯戒的一切罪恶。佛对阿难尊者说：若是有人能持《楞严 咒》，他犯了很多的戒，在一般小乘教义，破了比丘、比丘尼戒，有根本的，有轻罪。一般地说，重罪是不通忏悔的。假使若持《楞严 咒》的话，就能够把这个罪恶忏悔清净。
佛对阿难尊者说，若有能持此咒，犯了四重四十八轻，或者八重四十八轻，或者十重四十八轻，这是菩萨戒；或是比丘二百五十戒，比丘尼三百四十八戒。一般地犯了戒忏悔很困难，忏悔绝对清净比较困难，还经过很长的时间。
假使有人能持《楞严 咒》来忏悔罪业，这个快，因为《楞严 咒》的力量大。犯了一切错误，持《楞严 咒》，以咒的力量能使你诸罪消灭。而持了这个之后，所犯的戒不论轻戒或者重戒，罪恶容易忏悔干净。“一时销灭”，就是忏悔清净，能够返本还源。
